TradeSmart Update March 2008

Minister's Message
Easter falls early this year and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and safe Easter break.  It is a great time of year to wind down and review how your business is progressing in 2008.

It is also a good time to review your business practices and ensure your business is not vulnerable to scams.  In January we provided information on how your business can avoid scams.  With Fraud Fortnight upon us it provides a good reminder that scams not only effect individuals but can also impact businesses.  The best way to avoid scams is to ensure sound business processes and properly train staff.

For people working in the security industry, the Queensland Government has introduced improvements to the Security Providers Act 1993 to help protect both the industry and the community. The Security Providers Amendment Act 2007 strengthens existing provisions by increasing penalties for breaches of the Act plus providing a licensing regime for sectors within the security industry which have not been licensed before.

The Department of Justice and Attorney-General (JAG) has released a regulatory impact statement outlining how the new laws will be administrated and the possible effects of these changes on the industry.  If you haven't already looked at the regulatory impact statement I encourage you to as time is running out to provide feedback.

Fair trading has released a number of fact sheets which explain the security provider's law changes.  If you are in the industry these fact sheets will guide you through the changes.

Next year marks the 150th anniversary of Queensland's separation from New South Wales.  The Department of the Premier and Cabinet is running a funding program for not-for-profit incorporated community organisations, local councils and tertiary institutions wishing to celebrate the occasion.  I encourage you to become part of the celebrations.

I hope you enjoy this month's edition of TradeSmart update.  If you have suggestions for new tools that could assist you and your business, or ideas on what other topics you would like to see covered in the TradeSmart Update, email us via the feedback section at the end of this update.

Hon. Kerry Shine MP
Attorney-General Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR IP

As business owners become more familiar with intellectual property (IP) and the
potential value that it can bring to their business, it becomes increasingly important to
ensure that IP is identified and protected upon its creation. However, business owners
do not always have the necessary skills to identify the IP in their business, know how to
protect it, or know how to exploit its potential value.
